Season 2017-18 - Second Qualifying Round

Sunday 17th September
FC Romania 2 Hayes & Yeading United 2
A Duku penalty ten minutes from time rescued visitors Hayes & Yeading from an FA Cup upset at the hands of Essex Senior League side FC Romania to earn a replay on Tuesday night.

The away side, who ply their trade a step above in the Evo Stik Southern One East Division, started well and were gifted a tenth minute lead when a poor clearance from  hosts keeper Razvan Negrila went straight to Rohdell Gordon who duly accepted the gift and tucked home to give the visitors the ideal start.

The visitors continued to have the better of the contest until the hosts found a leveller just before the half hour mark when miscommunication in the Hayes defence allowed Florin Pop in to level.

With eight minutes to the half Spyros Mentis slipped in Rowan Vine who forced a save from Negrila, before Spyros then volleyed over from the edge of the box.  However the half did finish all square but the second half was only three minutes old when the hosts took the lead when a speculative long range effort from  Sergiu Maximov saw Hayes keeper Jack Smith save, however he could not prevent Toby Cleaver from following up to tap home rebound.

FCR went for a killer third and four minutes later hit the bar, but Hayes weathered that storm and saw Andrew Ofusu clip the bar with fifteen minutes to go as the visitors began to dominate.  Ehui then saw a drive deflected over the Romania bar but with then minutes to go the hosts discipline cost them when an apparent elbow on Spyros from Ion Constache resulted in a red card for the hosts and a penalty for the visitors, which Duku tucked away to level this tie up once again.

Duku fired over late on for Hayes whilst a goalmouth scramble inside the visitors box in stoppage time almost saw the hosts nick it, but it ended all square and means a replay at The SKYex Community Stadium in Hayes on Tuesday.

So it meant both teams had to go again two days later at Hayes & Yeading's SKYex Community Stadium and here is how that replay went:-
Tuesday 19th September
Replay
Hayes & Yeading United 2 FC Romania 0 (aet)
FC Romania are out of the FA Cup after two extra time goals from Hayes saw them to victory in their Second Qualifying Round Replay.

Andrew Ofosu had the first half chance of the game for the hosts but saw keeper Razvan Negrila save his pot shot and on 18 minutes the visitors saw skipper George Taban fire over after poor distribution from Jack Smith.

The hosts then went straight up the other end but saw a Ofusu toe poke go just wide as Negrila rushed out and on 21 minutes the Hayes midfield switched off but Tavares slid in to clear a certain goal for the visitors.

As the half approached its final ten minutes Romania looked the more likely to score but nine minutes before half time Hayes went mighty close with a header, before seeing Daidouh pass up a golden opportunity after the ball got stuck in his feet. Manny Duku saw a hosts free kick tipped wide and the first half ended goalless and ten minutes into the second period Matthew Hall fired over the visitors goal from a tight angle.

Just before the hour mark Romania had their first half chance of the second half but fired over from just outside the box, and midway through the half the visitors fired an effort into the side netting. And moments later Rohdell Gordon lost the ball and Romania went close again as they were now on the front foot.

As the game drifted towards extra time it went rather flat although either team could with it, however neither side could find a goal so an extra half hour was required. Two minutes into extra time Tommy Cooney's cross-cum-shot was turned over by FCR Keeper Negrila but in the 100th minute the hosts found the breakthrough when great work from Rowan Vine saw his pass find Duku and the Hayes forward converted to give his side the lead.

Two minutes into the second period of extra time Hayes had a 3 on 1 situation but saw Gordon shoot straight at a defender, before a visitors attack ended with Matt Hall clearing over his own bar from inside his own six yard box.

With seven minutes left Hayes saw Harly Wise sent off after receiving his second yellow, but as FCR pushed forward in search of a goal the hosts almost punished them twice on the break, seeing Ofusu's shot blocked before Duku saw an effort saved by Negrila's foot.

However with seconds remaining the hosts sealed their passage into the next round when from a visitors corner a clearance found Ofusu all alone and with the keeper up for the corner duly tapped home into the unguarded net. The visitors were reduced to ten men after the goal as their night ended on a sour note and crash out of the competition.

Here are highlights of the replay (courtesy of Hayes & Yeading United):-

So the higher league opponents finally saw off their Essex Senior League opponents, the Romanian's will feel they could of easily won both games, but the Evo Stik Southern One East side will also feel they deserve a place in the next round and it is them who went into the hat, and they pulled out a home tie with Vanarama South side Havant & Waterlooville from the south coast.  Can Hayes pull off a surprise? We shall see.

Season 2017-18 - First Qualifying Round

Saturday 2nd September
Hadley 2 FC Romania 3
Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round day saw me at Brickfield Lane as Spartan South Midlands Premier Hadley hosted Essex Senior League FC Romania in what promised to be a decent battle between two good sides.

Hadley had smashed in thirteen goals in their previous two rounds including a 9-1 away success at Langford in the previous round. FC Romania had had a much tougher passage, needing a replay to see off fellow ESL side Waltham Forest before battling past Thurlow Nunn Premier Long Melford in the last round.

Both teams know where the goal is though, and the game was not even a minute old when we saw our first one in this contest as the hosts got a dream start when the visitors allowed Jermeel Jno-Baptiste to run unchallenged to the edge of the box and unleash an effort that deflected in off the post.

But the visitors didn’t have to wait long to respond as in the fifth minute Sergiu Maximov struck a free kick that took a deflection off a defenders outstretched leg and over the keeper into the net. It had been a breathless start.

It didn’t let up either as the visitors carved out a great chance in the tenth minute as a ball across goal was somehow cleared off the line but, just a minute or so later FCR did take the lead when Florin Pop crossed for an unmarked Toby Cleaver to send a downward header into the net and the ESL side had the lead.

The hosts saw a downward header well fielded by the visitors keeper in the 18th minute and then midway through the half Hadley curled a free kick a foot over the bar as they looked to respond to going behind.

And just before the half-hour mark a Hadley cross to the back post was headed way over however the hosts were looking dangerous and giving the visitors plenty to think about.

However on the half hour mark the visitors should of increased their lead as Cleaver managed to get in on goal, compose himself, but slip at the vital moment and see his effort go wide of the near post.

With four mins of the half remaining FCR broke from a Hadley free kick and saw an effort from Pop deflect inches wide of the far post before another FCR effort after some good skill from Pop went straight at the hosts keeper as the visitors ended the half strongly.

It was a half that ended with the visitors ahead in what had been a very entertaining first half at Brickfield Lane.

The early exchanges of the second period saw the hosts drill a shot wide of the near post whilst the visitors curled an effort just wide down the other end and then nine minutes into the second half a long throw caught out the hosts back line and saw Pop in but his effort was blocked by a defender, although the visitors wanted a penalty as they claimed handball, but it was not given.

Midway through the half the visitors saw a couple more openings come their way when after a Cleaver header was caught by the keeper, his throw out went straight to Sergiu Pitaru whose effort went just wide, saving the keepers blushes.

With twenty minutes remaining FCR got in again but saw the keeper beat away their effort at the near post. Cleaver was free in the middle for the visitors too and had the ball been laid across to him he surely would of tapped home. Moments later down the other end the hosts suddenly found themselves in down the right however a rush of blood saw them blaze well over.

But with ten minutes to go the visitors gifted the hosts an equaliser when they allowed a long ball to bounce, encouraging pressure from Kerkstun Macpherson, and this pressure saw a poor header back to the keeper who miscontrolled the ball, and left Macpherson the simple job of rolling the ball into the empty net and set up a grandstand finale to this epic cup tie.

You felt that after that equaliser the hosts may go onto win it and with six minutes left the home side played a terrific ball across goal but no one gambled and the chance had gone.

And then a minute or so later the visitors went oh so close to a potential winner as a curling effort from outside of the box struck the outside of the post with the keeper well and truly beaten.

With three minutes remaining FCR curled a free kick just wide, it really was anyone’s game this but could anyone find a winner?

Well a minute into stoppage time we had that winner as this superb contest was settled by an absolute peach of a strike as after Hadley have given the ball away in midfield, FCR's Jagura sent a long range effort over the keeper who was off his line into the net and see the visitors go wild.

It was a superb late winner and fit to win any game of football, let alone this one. It had been a terrific battle and both teams should take credit for that. However it was FC Romania who took their place in the hat for the Second Qualifying Round draw and they pulled out a home tie with Evo-Stik Southern East side Hayes & Yeading United, one step above them in the pyramid.

I will of course be at Theobalds Lane, Cheshunt FC, for FC Romania Vs Hayes & Yeading United.  FCR have so far battled past Waltham Forest, Long Melford and Hadley to reach this stage, whilst Hayes & Yeading defeated Brimscombe & Thrupp and Maldon & Tiptree to reach this stage of the competition.  And although the hosts are one step below their visiting opponents they have every chance of winning this tie.  It proves to be an exciting afternoon at Theobalds Lane on Sunday 17th September.

I'll be back with a review of that game plus a full results round up of the Second Qualifying Round once it's all done n dusted.  And obviously I'll bring you the full draw for the Third Qualifying Round, with that draw taking place on Monday 18th September, and look ahead to my next featured game also.  So for now cheerio and enjoy whatever cup tie you go to.
